Hardware Setup

The core of the storage system is the SAM-FS Hierarchical Storage Management System that takes care of  safe storage, an exchange between disks and tapes and the immediate generation of two copies.

Currently, the following hardware setup is in operation:

  • a storage system of 2 SUN Sparc III Servers, 10 TB fast RAID Disks, 20 TB slow RAID Disks, 85 TB Tape Library, FiberChannel connection which takes care of storage management and media streaming
  • a set of web-servers (multiprocessor Linux systems with fast CPUs) taking care of fast searching, metadata handling, web-uploading, web-access to annotations and lexica
  • a set of web-servers (multiprocessor Linux systems) taking care of email, web-access, etc.
  • a set of servers supporting the software development and test work
  • a fast network with a router supporting a 1 Gbps link to the outside world and 10 Gbps internal switches.
