Advisory Boards

For the DOBES programme we have two advisory boards that help in two respects:

Linguistic Advisory Board

The documentation of endangered languages involves several different parties operating in very different ethical, social and political environments. Thus, we can expect many different problems to arise during the language documentation activities, and when the archive is accessed. To solve such problems, and to give general advice to the members of the research and archive teams, a board of internationally acknowledged scholars with much experience in field research was established in the beginning of 2002. This Linguistic Advisory Board is completely autonomous; it is not involved in decisions within the DOBES program.

Archive Advisory Board

The DOBES language resource archive contains many resources about human cultural heritage that on the one hand cannot be recovered again, and that on the other hand are interesting for current and future users. Such archives have to adhere to a number of principles that have been agreed upon; taking care of long-term survival of the material, giving interested users access to the data and synchronizing their efforts with other digital archives.

To achieve a high degree of transparency about the rules that are applied and stability with respect to the two main aspects; accessibility and persistency, an Archive Advisory Board, with experts from the area of archives and technology relevant for archiving, was formed. The archivists will report to the AAB about the state of the principles and technology, and seek their advice when important changes are intended. This Archive Advisory Board is completely autonomous; it will give advice with respect to the whole MPI archive. The archivists at the MPI will remain responsible in all respects.
