Kuikuro

The Kuikuro language, culture and oral traditions have been documented since 1976 by Bruna Franchetto, researcher and teacher of the Department of Anthropology and the Graduate Program in Social Anthropology of the National Museum, Federal Univeristy of Rio de Janeiro. She is also researcher of the CNPq (Brazilian Scientific National Counsel).

Mara Santos and Jaqueline Medeiros de França, two graduate students in linguistics at the University of Rio de Janeiro/UFRJ, work half-time in the project as main researcher assistants. Mara is preparing her master dissertation on Kuikuro verbal classes and derivational processes. Jaqueline helps with the digitation of data and field note books and began in 2000 a documentation project on the Yawalapiti language (arawak), a very endangered language of the Upper Xingu.

The Kuikuro project has three permanent consultants to develop interdisciplinary documentation: Dr. Carlos Fausto (anthropologist, National Museum, UFRJ), Dr. Michael Heckenberger (arqueologist, University of Florida) and Dr. Sergio Meira (historical linguist specialized in languages of the Carib family, MPI/Nijmegen).
