Wooi

The Wooi project includes a strong capacity- and institution building component for sustainable language documentation work in the region. It is based on the hypothesis that endangered languages in an area of more than 240 speech communities need the establishment of documentation structures both at a regional and a local level.

Yusuf Sawaki has been training students in language documentation and description at the Universitas Negeri Papua in Manokwari for a number of years; Nikolaus P. Himmelmann has conducted training workshops with Indonesian highpotentials in various locations since 2005.  Alexander Loch managed developmental capacity building programs since 1998, including a research centre for cultural appropriate teaching materials in neighboring East Timor. Joining their experiences and visions, in 2009 a Center for Endangered language documentation (CELD) was setup in Manokwari. Its first project is the documentation of Wooi, however a second documentation project (on the non-Austronesian language Iha) has already started. Apart from working on language documentations and descriptions, the center organizes culture-related programs with community members and provides support and training for local linguists and cultural activists.
