First EAGLES/ISLE Workshop on Meta-Descriptions and Annotation Schemas for
Multimodal/Multimedia Language Resources

The European Language Resources Association (ELRA) and its Distribution Agency (ELDA) are currently completing the second stage of on on-going Language Resource (LR) user needs survey that includes a section on needs with respect to Multimodal/Multimedia Language Resources (MMLRs). Results of the survey pertaining to these types of LRs will be presented at this workshop in order to show the importance of such data from a total of 250 user institutions that have already responded. This survey, in addition to a preference list of LRs mentioned in previous ELRA calls for the production of LRs, clearly indicate an increasing need for MMLRs. ELRA also promotes the design and use of different LR validation manuals (currently available for written corpora and lexica, and for speech LRs) that have been and are currently being used for both in-production validation and post-production validation procedures. It is therefore of utmost importance that the minimum set of core criteria for MMLR meta-description and annotation schemas be developed. This will help set standards that can be followed by LR producers and in turn be expected by LRs users. Such standards should be documented in a new set of MMLR validation manuals that ELRA desires to sponsor and implement for the production and validation of future MMLRs. It is important that clear descriptions for MMLRs be integrated into such a new validation manual. By promoting the use of such standards and validation manuals, it will be possible to ensure the quality of future MMLRs for this rapidly increasing sector of LR activity.
