MECHANISMS OF SPEECH PERCEPTION AT BIRTH: NIRS STUDIES WITH NEWBORNS
Laboratoire Psychologie de la Perception
The talk will report a series of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) studies, which investigate the foundational mechanisms of speech perception at birth. We tested how newborn infants perceive the acoustic correlates of speech prosody, how they use prosody to start learning about word order and how they normalize speech across different speech rates. These studies show that newborns have sophisticated auditory and speech perception abilities, which show evidence both of universal mechanisms as well as of learning and prenatal experience.
