Language research at Radboud University number one
The Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) publishes a ranking that measures educational performance and research. The ranking features the top global universities in 227 subjects covering all academic disciplines in the sciences and social sciences. Within the research field of 'Linguistics', Radboud University was ranked the first of the world. The definition of CWUR referred to covers human language research more broadly.
It is especially the strength of the collaboration between the MPI and the university’s Donders Institute for Brain and Cognition and Behaviour and Center for Language Studies, and furthermore, MPI’s major involvement in the Language in Interaction program, that the Radboud University topped the list.
The CWUR ranking for the research area of Linguistics has resulted in the following top 10:
- Radboud University Nijmegen
- University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign
- University College London
- University of Toronto
- University of Edinburgh
- University of Wisconsin–Madison
- Pennsylvania State University
- Ohio State University
- University of Maryland, College Park
- Harvard University
Harvard University was again ranked as the best university in the world, followed by Standford and MIT. Aside from two UK universities – University of Cambridge and Oxford – the top 10 list is dominated by US institutes.
The CWUR claims to be the only global university ranking that measures the quality of education and training of students, as well as the prestige of the faculty members and the quality of their research, without relying on surveys and university data submissions. The center uses public data for this: awards/ prizes by academic staff and alumni, the number of alumni who currently hold top executive jobs, number of publications and patents, and citations of the two. The score for research is based on the number of scientific publications in leading journals.
