Rick Janssen

I am a graduate in 'Artificial Intelligence' (cum laude, i.e., first class honours). I wrote my thesis at the Italian National Research Council under Stefano Nolfi on the topic of computer simulations of coevolving systems, more specifically on the emergence of limit cycling during coevolutionary arms-races.

Currently, I am working on my PhD under Dan Dediu and Scott Moisik for daily supervision and Simon Fisher as promotor, on the highly transdisciplinary `GEnetic BIasing in Language and Speech' (GEBILS) VIDI project. More specifically, I will be focusing on computational modelling of cultural evolution of speech (i.e., dispersion in acoustic space) as influenced by anatomical biases from the vocal tract. In doing so, I am approaching the topic from a complex adaptive systems perspective, explaining language features as properties emerging from interactions between many, naive human 'agents' on top of a subtler account of biological innateness.
