About MPI

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is an institute of the German Max Planck Society. Our mission is to undertake basic research into the psychological, social and biological foundations of language. The goal is to understand how our minds and brains process language, how language interacts with other aspects of mind, and how we can learn languages of quite different types.

The institute is situated on the campus of the Radboud University. We participate in the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, and have particularly close ties to that institute's Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging. We also participate in the Centre for Language Studies. A joint graduate school, the IMPRS in Language Sciences, links the Donders Institute, the CLS and the MPI.

Call for Applications: 2012 IMPRS for Language Sciences PhD Fellowships NOW CLOSED

The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Language Sciences is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics and two research institutes based at the Radboud University Nijmegen, the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour and the Centre for Language Studies. The research school offers an unrivalled training and research environment in the language sciences, allowing interdisciplinary work of the highest standard.

The IMPRS for Language Sciences is now advertising three doctoral fellowships in any field contributing to the language sciences, for example, linguistics, psycholinguistics, cognitive neuroscience of language, or language and genetics.

The fellowships are, in the normal case, three years in length. Fellowship recipients will receive a monthly salary sufficient to cover living costs in Nijmegen, The Netherlands.

Applicants must have a Masters degree (or expect to complete the degree before September 2012) in a relevant field. The working language of the research school is English.

Applications must be prepared according to the following guidelines or will not be considered. Your application must be emailed as one PDF document that includes the following information:

Curriculum vitae.
Include:
  • Relevant work and educational background.
  • Details about your completed or expected Masters degree, including supervisors, date of completion, title of thesis and a brief description of your topic, and any grades you received for relevant coursework (no official transcript required).
  • Details about your technical skillset and proficiency. For example, this may include programming, statistics, mathematical knowledge, experimental design/methods, neuroimaging, practical phonetics, corpus methods, fieldwork, etc.

Research proposal. No more than one page. Include:
  • Your proposed research question (one sentence) and title (no longer than 10 words).
  • A sketch of your proposed PhD research project that gives a basic overview of your proposed research and the methods you would hope to employ. Note, the details of the final research project would be decided upon in consultation with supervisors if a fellowship were awarded—here we would like to see how well you can frame a research question and test a hypothesis.
  • Names of potential supervisors from any of the three IMPRS partner institutes. You can find out about researchers’ work from the partner institute websites (see below for links). You do not need to contact potential supervisors at this time.

Personal statement. No more than half a page.
  • The IMPRS community is an active one, where our students take part in enrichment and training, and help to organise activities for the research school. If you were awarded a fellowship (a) whom would you like to invite as a guest speaker? (b) what professional development training would be most useful for you? and (c) what activities would you propose?

References. Provide:
  • Names, titles and email contact details of two academic referees. We will only contact them if you are shortlisted for an interview.

Proof of English-language proficiency if not a native English speaker. Provide:
  • Electronic copy/scan of TOEFL/Cambridge/IELTS certificate or equivalent. This may be submitted after the main application deadline if necessary.

The final day for applications is Thursday, 5 January 2012. Applications received after this date will not be considered.

Send your application by email (marked "IMPRS application") to imprs@mpi.nl. All queries may also be sent to this address. In your email, please specify how you heard about the IMPRS for Language Sciences.

Interviews with shortlisted candidates will be held in mid-February 2012. Start dates for the positions will be 3 September 2012.
