The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is an institute of the German Max Planck Society. Our mission is to undertake basic research into the psychological,social and biological foundations of language. The goal is to understand how our minds and brains process language, how language interacts with other aspects of mind, and how we can learn languages of quite different types.

The institute is situated on the campus of the Radboud University. We participate in the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, and have particularly close ties to that institute's Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging. We also participate in the Centre for Language Studies. A joint graduate school, the IMPRS in Language Sciences, links the Donders Institute, the CLS and the MPI.

 

Max Planck PhD Positions: Human Genetics, Functional Genomics

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (Nijmegen, the Netherlands) is offering PhD positions in human genetics and functional genomics.

The MPI in Nijmegen is one of the leading research institutes in the world, with a very stimulating environment, excellent facilities and resources. The Language & Genetics Department at the MPI uses state-of-the-art methods and cutting-edge technologies to trace the connections between genes, neuronal and brain functions, and behavior. Moreover, we benefit from close connections with expert teams in neuroscience and brain imaging at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, and in human genetics at the Human Genetics Department of Radboud University.
We seek exceptional students with a talent and inclination for first class research, to carry out projects related to the priority interests in our department. Examples of our research activities and interests are:
•    Genome-wide association analysis in large cohorts with language impairments
•    Isolating language-related genes with next-generation sequencing and multi-level data extraction and mining
•    Functional dissection of neurogenetic pathways involved in speech and language
•    Genetic association studies of brain structure and function

Candidates should have, or shortly expect to obtain, a high quality masters degree in a subject that is related, or can be applied, to one of our priority interests. Masters degrees should involve several months of experience and training on a scientific project. For computer-based projects, some technical skills in scripting and handling large datasets will be an advantage. Laboratory-based candidates should have their degree in molecular biology, genetics, molecular neuroscience or related subject.

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is a vibrant research environment in a charming university town. Nijmegen is situated 1.5 hours from Amsterdam, and has easy access to Belgium and Germany.


The PhD positions are funded for 3 years. The Language & Genetics department provides fully equipped research facilities, technical support, as well as a conference and travel budget.
