Features (and feature counts) from Phoible and Ruhlen's databases [database and software tools]

Dediu, D., & Moisik, S. R. (2015). Features (and feature counts) from Phoible and Ruhlen's databases [database and software tools]. GitHub.
Segment-level cross-linguistic databases such as Phoible and Ruhlen are great resources, but they do not provide abstract classes of sounds (such as "consonant" or "front rounded vowel") needed for more abstract cross-linguistic comparisons. This resource, developed with Scott Moisik as part of the G[ɜ]bils project and freely available on GitHub, uses two feature systems to define and count such abstract classes across the languages contained in these two databases. There you can find not only the database itself (in the output folder) but also the needed input files (input folder) and the actual R script (code folder), allowing our results to be reproduced and extended. Please make sure you read the comprehensive README.md file first!
About MPI

This is the MPI

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is an institute of the German Max Planck Society. Our mission is to undertake basic research into the psychological, social and biological foundations of language. The goal is to understand how our minds and brains process language, how language interacts with other aspects of mind, and how we can learn languages of quite different types.

The institute is situated on the campus of the Radboud University. We participate in the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, and have particularly close ties to that institute's Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging. We also participate in the Centre for Language Studies. A joint graduate school, the IMPRS in Language Sciences, links the Donders Institute, the CLS and the MPI.
