About MPI

 

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is an institute of the German Max Planck Society. Our mission is to undertake basic research into the psychological,social and biological foundations of language. The goal is to understand how our minds and brains process language, how language interacts with other aspects of mind, and how we can learn languages of quite different types.

The institute is situated on the campus of the Radboud University. We participate in the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, and have particularly close ties to that institute's Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging. We also participate in the Centre for Language Studies. A joint graduate school, the IMPRS in Language Sciences, links the Donders Institute, the CLS and the MPI.

Donders Institute for brain, cognition, and behaviour

Within the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour (DI-BCB), the MPI closely cooperates with four other Nijmegen-based research institutes that study brain, cognition, and behaviour: the Donders Centre for Cognition (formerly the NICI), the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging (formerly FC Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging), the Donders Centre for Neuroscience, and the Behavioural Science Institute. more>

 

CLARIN

Clarin-grootCLARIN (Common Language Resources and Technology Infrastructure) is about creating new infrastructure required to make e-Humanities possible.The CLARIN project is a large-scale European collaboration to make language resources and technology available. CLARIN offers scholars tools for computer-aided language processing, addressing one or more of the multiple roles language plays in the Humanities and Social Sciences. CLARIN aims at turning existing fragmented technology and resources into accessible, interoperable and stable services that users can share or adapt. It will create a service oriented architecture that will allow extensions of all sorts. The services will be based on a network of strong service centers of different types such as for supporting data resources and tools, for offering infrastructure services and for giving advice. more>


Nijmegen Gesture Centre

The Nijmegen Gesture Centre (NGC), initiated and co-ordinated by Asli Ozyurek and Marianne Gullberg, brings together the interests of researchers concerned with the study of gestures at the MPI and across the campus of Radboud University in Nijmegen. The purpose of the Nijmegen Gesture Centre is to conduct and promote basic research on gestures, to facilitate interactions and intellectual exchange among gesture researchers through lecture series, workshops, etc., and ultimately to help put gesture on the research agendas in other disciplines. more >

 

Evolution of semantic systems

A joint research initiative between the Evolutionary Processes in Language and Culture group and Categories across Language and Cognition project at the Max Planck Institute of Psycholinguistics.

The aim of the EoSS project is to investigate how meanings vary over space and change over time. We focus on different kinds of categories: containers (kinds of objects), colour (attributes of objects), body parts (parts of objects), and spatial relations (how objects are related to one another).

This study aims to collect data from 20 participants in each of 50 languages from the Indo-European language family. The project is estimated to run for approximately three years; the data collection phase is planned to take two years starting January 2011.
