Coordination of cognitive systems -

Home

This project investigates the Eye_tracking.pngrelationship between language comprehension and production and other cognitive processes, including attention, vision, and working memory.

Work in this project focuses on the functional architecture of the mind and aims to examine theoretical issues such as parallel vs. ERP_CCS.pngserial processing, domain-specific vs.domain-general processes, and cognitive control.

Key concerns include how linguistic and non-linguistic processes jointly determine language comprehension and production, and how the linguistic system interfaces with perceptual systems and attention.

Subprojects include

  • What is the role of working memory in linking language, attention, and vision?
  • Which attentional networks and cognitive control mechanisms are involved during language-mediated visual orienting?
  • How do the properties of the visual environment and the goals of the viewer influence language-mediated eye gaze?
  • What is the role of sensory and motor representations during language processing?
  • How do speakers coordinate visual information uptake and speech planning?
  • What is the role of attention in different stages of speech planning?
  • How far ahead do speakers plan when talking about what they see?
