DOBES-WORKSHOP 2009
Advances in Documentary Linguistics, 15-16 October 2009
We invite Dobes project members to submit papers on the following topics:
1. Language classification
2. The role of anthropology in language documentation
3. Cooperative fieldwork
4. PhD projects
Languages classification
In view of the continuing negotiations on the future of the ISO standard for language codes (639-4/5/6), which assigns a three letter code to each language, this session starts with an overview of the existing state of standardisation and continues with short contributions (max.
10 minutes) and an open discussion. As the expertise of DOBES members covers a wide range of language families, this would be an excellent opportunity for exchanging ideas on language classification and the standardisation of codes.
The role of anthropology in language documentation
This session focuses on the research design and outcome of interdisciplinary linguistic and anthropological research to demonstrate the consequences of anthropological co-research for
language documentation and the effects of language documentation projects on anthropological research.
Cooperative fieldwork
DOBES projects aim at the active participation of community members in language documentation, which not only helps to avoid conflicts between researchers and community members, but may also lead to new kinds of data and unexpected findings. Contributions to this session will highlight such findings and encourage the audience to discuss the problems of cooperative fieldwork
