Fromkins Speech Error Database - Background
The Fromkin Speech Error Database was collected over many years, and was converted (along with eight other error corpora) to computer-readable form at UCLA with support from a National Science Foundation grant to Professor Victoria A. Fromkin
At the time of Vicki Fromkin's death in January 2000, the wider availability of the database was in doubt because there was no longer support for the software format used to encode it. This version of the database is the 2000 version in XML format. The plan to rescue the Fromkin Database was developed by Anne Cutler, Caroline Henton, Peter Ladefoged, Sieb Nooteboom, Carson Schutze, and Stefanie Shattuck-Hufnagel. The XML conversion was carried out by Hansje Braam under the supervision of Sieb Nooteboom, with financial support from the Max Planck Society .
The development of a speech error archive is continuing at UCLA. The system under development includes web-based search coupled with a menu-driven interface for entering new slips, verification/correction of the UCLASEC codings, improved documentation, and an on-line bibliography. The URL for this updated version will be given here as soon as it is available; meanwhile contact Carson Schutze (cschutze@ucla.edu) for more information. Queries concerning addition of new material should also be sent to that address.
To consult the database, return to the previous page and click on the link Speech Error Database. Error selections may be downloaded with the Download button. Note that it is not advisable to download more than 500 entries at once.
