About MPI

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is an institute of the German Max Planck Society. Our mission is to undertake basic research into the psychological,social and biological foundations of language. The goal is to understand how our minds and brains process language, how language interacts with other aspects of mind, and how we can learn languages of quite different types.

The institute is situated on the campus of the Radboud University. We participate in the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, and have particularly close ties to that institute's Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging. We also participate in the Centre for Language Studies. A joint graduate school, the IMPRS in Language Sciences, links the Donders Institute, the CLS and the MPI.

Baby lab

Our Baby Lab facilities are those of the Baby Research Centre, located elsewhere on the Radboud University campus. more >

Behavioral labs (sound proof cabins)

The institute has many facilities to run behavioral experiments. Most rooms have soundproof cabins and are equipped with high-fidelity headphones, microphones, and push button devices. more >

EEG lab

We have an on-site 128-channel EEG lab, and can make use of additional EEG labs at the Donders Institute, Centre for Cognitive Neuromaging. more >

Eyetracking labs

The institute has three experimental rooms with eye-tracking equipment. Two of these eye-trackers are head-mounted. In addition, two portable eye-trackers are available for field studies, one of which can also be used with children.

fMRI lab

The fMRI facilities used in our research are the 1.5, 3, and 7 Tesla scanners of the Donders Institute, Centre for Cognitive Neuromaging. more >

Gesture lab

In this lab, we use multiple digital video cameras (including two top views) to conduct research on gestures and sign language. more >

MEG lab

Our MEG lab is a whole head MEG system, located at the Donders Institute, Centre for Cognitive Neuromaging. more >

Virtual reality lab

We are currently building a state of the art immersive Virtual Reality (VR) laboratory. more >
