[If you do not already have a project-based diagram open (see section 2.1 above - option 'Open Diagram')] From the File menu, select New Diagram of Type and Kin Terms Diagram.
In the tab on the right of the page, fill in the table (for the moment you can skip Propositus Kin Type Strings). The header Kin Term is quite straightforward: enter the kin terms; under the header Referent Kin Type Strings enter the kin types corresponding to the kin terms previously written; under Description you can put, for example, the English gloss of the kin terms (if these are in a different language).
E.g.: Italian kin terms
Kin Term - padre; Referent Kin Type Strings - EF; Description: father
K.T. - madre; R.K.T.S. - EM; D. - mother
K.T. - fratello; R.K.T.S. - EB; D. - brother
K.T. - sorella; R.K.T.S. - EZ; D. - sister
etcetera. The diagram will grow as you add kin terms.
If you want to create a new kin term group [take Japanese Kin Terms sample diagram as reference: File > Open Sample Diagram > Japanese Kin Terms] go to Kin Terms menu on top of the page and select New Kin Term Group. A second tab will open on the right of the page. It is of the same type as the one you already used and the table in it needs to be filled in the same way (choose a different color so that the two kin term groups can be easily distinguished).
Two functions that you may use while working on a kin terms diagram are: a) importing previously created and saved kin terms; b) exporting the ones you have just created. As for the former, go to Kin Terms menu and select Import. A window will open asking you to choose a file. Choose the one you need and select Open. The kin terms will appear both in the table on the right of the page and in the main panel in the form of diagram. Besides, another window popping up will tell you how many kin terms have been imported. As for exporting, select the option Export from the Kin Terms menu. A window will open asking you to choose a directory where to export the kin terms and a file name; then select Save. The kin terms will be exported to the chosen directory.
Finally, there are two more options you can use: 1) Show on graph. It is checked by default, which implies that you are able to see the actual kin terms. If you unckeck it, the kin terms will be removed from the diagram but kept in the table. 2) Generate Example Entities. It is checked by default as well, and it allows you to see the diagram developing and growing as you enter new kin terms. If you uncheck it, the whole diagram will go away (but the kin terms, like in the previous case, are kept in the table).
