Stephen Levinson reveals the hidden engine of human communication

Titled ‘The Interaction Engine’, the book explores the foundations of human communication through a wide-ranging, interdisciplinary lens - now available open access through Cambridge University Press.
In an age where academic discourse is increasingly siloed into journal articles, Levinson makes the case for the enduring value of the book format. “It allows one to traverse a much wider territory,” he writes. True to form, The Interaction Engine spans topics from the evolutionary roots of language to the subtle ways we forge social bonds through talk.
Interaction engine
At the heart of the book is a compelling thesis: that humans are equipped with an evolved “interaction engine”; a suite of specialized skills and innate motivations for communication that go far beyond what our closest primate relatives display. While apes can gesture or vocalize, only humans build societies and relationships through sustained, intricate talk.
“Communicative interaction is a relatively neglected topic in the social and linguistic sciences,” Levinson observes, “despite its obvious centrality to our well-being and how we build our lives.” He suggests this neglect may stem from the fact that, like fish unaware of the water they swim in, humans rarely reflect on the conversational medium that underpins nearly every aspect of social life.
Spark inquiry
Levinson’s goal is nothing less than to spark a broader, more integrated inquiry into communication across disciplines: from linguistics and anthropology to psychology and evolutionary biology. In that spirit, the book is written in a clear and accessible style, aiming to engage not just specialists, but anyone interested in what makes us human.
Thanks to the support of the Max Planck Society and the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, the book is available free to all.
