How did you come to pursue your research topic in Nijmegen?
My interest in sign languages began many years ago, while working with Deaf communities in Turkey. Over time, I became deeply curious about the linguistic structure of Turkish Sign Language (TİD) and how it conveys meaning through both manual and non-manual expressions. After working on several TİD documentation and grammar projects, I wanted to approach these questions in a more systematic and theoretical manner. Joining IMPRS and the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (MPI) provided the perfect environment to combine my experience with advanced linguistic and experimental training in a truly international research community.
What are some of the highlights of your doctoral life so far?
The MPI offers a unique atmosphere of collaboration and intellectual openness, which I find very inspiring. I particularly value the support and expertise of my supervisors Aslı Özyürek, Beyza Sümer, and Roland Pfau who guide me with both academic depth and personal encouragement. Through IMPRS courses and workshops, I have gained new methodological and experimental skills that allow me to study sign language structure more precisely. Living in Nijmegen has also been rewarding. It is a welcoming and inclusive city that fosters both focus and connection.
