Kang-Suk Byun

I am a Ph.D Student in the Interactional foundations of language project with the Language and Cognition Department. I am affiliated with the ERC Advanced Grant INTERACT awarded to Stephen C. Levinson at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics as well as the ERC Avanced Grant Multi-sign awarded to Ulrike Zeshan at the iSLanDS Institute (University of Central Lancashire).

Research interests

My interest lies in cross-signing, a form of ad hoc communication that arises from first encouters between Deaf individuals who do not know a common sign language. My research is focused on the conversational infrastructure and metalinguistic abilities that enable signers to co-construct meaning across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
