I am interested in the sound structures of human languages, with a focus on their mapping onto physical utterances in everyday conversation. My work therefore touches aspects of phonetics and phonology, psycholinguistics, corpus linguistics and interaction studies.

My current research in the Language and Cognition department focuses on turn-taking and action formation/ascription in conversation. My primary interest in this project concerns the role of prosodic phenomena (e.g., phrasing, tonal patterns, speech rhythm) in turn-taking and in speech act formation/ascription. I am also conducting articulatory research on breathing in turn-taking, and quantitative studies of turn-transition times in large speech corpora.
