Two Student Assistants on ERC project 'Communication in Action'

Radboud University
Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour
Application deadline: 05-08-2018

The Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour is offering two student assistant positions (each position for up to 19 hrs/week).The student assistants will join the Communication on Social Interaction (CoSI) Group (, led by PI Judith Holler ( The role of the student assistants will be to support the Communication in Action (CoAct) project recently funded by the European Research Council.

The CoAct project investigates the role of visual communicative signals (including those performed with the hands, head, torso and face) during language use and processing in situated, face-to-face communication. In doing so, the project combines a variety of methodological approaches, including the collection and analysis of conversational corpus data and experimental data. The analyses of multimodal language use and processing will rely partly on traditional data (e.g., video recordings and conversational behaviour coding, reaction times, EEG), as well as on novel motion capture data and Virtual Reality techniques.

Getting this exciting new project off the ground requires support from student assistants that will help us particularly during the first phase of this 5-year project in order to code (manually and [semi-]automatically) large amounts of conversational corpus data (visual and speech data). In addition, the SAs may be involved in collecting data with experimental set-ups and may complete organizational or small administrative tasks, as well as audio transcription.

What we expect from you

Applicants should have an interest in multimodal language, excellent time management and organizational skills, a good eye for detail and be reliable, precise and proactive problem solvers. Experience with coding speech and visual communication data (especially with Praat or Elan) is an advantage. Scripting skills (esp. Python), too, are an advantage. Experimental experience is a plus.

Applicants must be Dutch native speakers (or have near-native Dutch language skills).

Available for approximately 19 hours per week spread over three days.

About MPI

This is the MPI

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is an institute of the German Max Planck Society. Our mission is to undertake basic research into the psychological, social and biological foundations of language. The goal is to understand how our minds and brains process language, how language interacts with other aspects of mind, and how we can learn languages of quite different types.

The institute is situated on the campus of the Radboud University. We participate in the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, and have particularly close ties to that institute's Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging. We also participate in the Centre for Language Studies. A joint graduate school, the IMPRS in Language Sciences, links the Donders Institute, the CLS and the MPI.
