On 17 May 2018, Professor Pim Levelt, psycholinguist and founder of our Institute, turned 80 years. Through Levelt’s work the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (MPI) became one of the worldwide leading institutes for language research. Its history goes back some 40 years.

Around 1976, Levelt was invited by the German Max Planck Society to establish a project group on psycholinguistic research. Four years later, on the first of January 1980, the project group became a Max Plank Institute. With Wolfgang Klein, a trained linguist, Levelt started building up the Institute with initially a focus on the research topics language production and acquisition. Over the years, the research portfolio of the Institute has been extended, under the leadership of Levelt, his colleagues and successors.

For the full CV of Levelt, see here.

In celebration of Levelt’s 80th birthday the following events will take place:

  • May 25: Symposium/dinner for invited guests in the Embassy of the Free Mind, Amsterdam
  • July 2-4: International Workshop on Language Production (ILWP) at the MPI
