1. Data controllers

As operator of this Facebook page, we, the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science e.V., assume joint control with the operator of the social network of Facebook Ireland Ltd., as stipulated in Art. 4(7) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). When you visit our Facebook page, the data controllers process your personal data. Below, we shall outline which data is concerned, how it is processed, and also which rights you have pertaining to such data.

As the data controller of this page, we have entered into an agreement with Facebook, which, among other, governs the conditions for using this Facebook page. 2. Use of Insights and Cookies

In connection with the operation of this Facebook page, we use Facebook’s Insights function to obtain anonymous statistical data about our Facebook users. For the purpose of gathering such data, Facebook stores a cookie on the terminal device of users visiting our Facebook Page. Each cookie contains a unique user code and remains active for a period of two years unless it is deleted earlier. Facebook can link the user code with the data of registered Facebook users.

3. Purposes of Data Processing

Facebook processes user data for, among other, the improvement of its advertising network. The social site also provides us, as operator of the Facebook page, with visitor-related statistics on our Facebook page. This allows us to control our market performance. To name just one example, knowing the profiles of our visitors who like our Facebook page or use applications of that page enables us to make our contents more relevant to you and to develop functions that may be of greater interest for you.

To better understand how our Facebook Page can help us better achieve our business goals, we also use the information we collect to create and share demographic and geographic reports. We may use this information to serve targeted interest-based advertisements without immediately knowing the visitor's identity. If visitors use Facebook on several end devices, the collection and evaluation can also be carried out across devices if they are registered visitors logged into their own profile.

The visitor statistics compiled are transmitted to us exclusively in anonymous form. We do not have access to the underlying data.

4. Legal Foundation and Legitimate Interests

We operate this Facebook page to introduce ourselves to and communicate with the Facebook community as well as other interested visitors. Processing personal data of visitors is within our legitimate interests in the optimised presentation of our enterprise and products (Article 6(1) point (f) GDPR).

5. Data transfer

It is conceivable that some of the information collected may also be processed outside the European Union by Facebook Inc. with its domicile in the USA. Certification according to the Privacy Shield data protection treaty between the US and the EU obligates Facebook Inc. to comply with European data protection regulations.

We do not transfer any personal data ourselves.

 6. The Right of Objection

Facebook users are able to set their Advertising Preferences via Facebook settings to the extent that they are permitted to input their user preferences during their visit to our Facebook site. The Facebook Settings and filling out the form to exercise the Right to Object offer further opportunities to guard your privacy.

Furthermore, users are able to use their browser settings to prevent third parties and/or Facebook from processing their data by means of cookies installed by Facebook or other parties.

7. The Nature of Joint Responsibility  

Our data protection agreement with Facebook includes provisions on joint control. In essence, users are to address requests for information and pursuit of claims regarding further rights of data subjects directly to Facebook. This makes sense because Facebook as social network provider offers the opportunity to publish web pages and is thus alone able to provide direct access to required information, provide information and take action if necessary.
