Obituary Reimar Lüst
07 April 2020

Reimar Lüst passed away on March 31, 2020. Max Planck President Lüst established our Institute forty years ago, on January 1, 1980. It was the first time the Max Planck Society founded an Institute abroad, a highly delicate operation carefully prepared since 1976 when President Lüst established the Project Group for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. The photograph shows the President opening the Project Group on May 3, 1977.
For visionary Reimar Lüst, establishment of our Institute was a first move in marking the Max Planck Society as a European science organization. Indeed, his further career was characterized by highly effectively integrating German science in larger European and world-wide frameworks.
The founding directors Pim Levelt and Wolfgang Klein mourn the loss of a dear friend of the Institute, in gratitude for his unique contribution to the growth and prosperity of modern psycholinguistics. Our condolences to the family of Reimar Lüst.
