Information for participants: IDLaS-EN PILOT 2

Department: Psychology of Language

What is the study about?

Welcome to our study! We are a team of researchers as the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics researching individual differences in language, with project lead Dr. Kyla McConnell. In this study, we are researching differences in linguistic and cognitive abilities in adults. For this research, we will make use of a collection of recently developed tests that measure various aspects of language and cognition (e.g. memory). The study will be carried out by the Psychology of Language department under supervision of Prof. Antje Meyer, Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. The study has been presented to the ethical committee of the Faculty of Social Sciences (Ethiek Commisie Faculteit Sociale Wetenschappen (ECSW)) of the Radboud University Nijmegen via the Light-track procedure.

What happens when I participate?

This study is about thirty-five minutes long and consists of three different language-based tasks. The study takes place online, meaning that you can participate using your own computer or laptop. During each task, the instructions will be displayed on your screen.

These tasks require your voice to be recorded. You will have to do a quick microphone test to ensure that your computer has proper hardware – this test requires both a working microphone and working speakers or headphones

Will I be paid for my participation?

You will be paid via Prolific for participating in this study, according with their terms and conditions. Please refer to the Prolific project page for full details.

What are the risks?

There are no risks connected to participation to this study.

What will happen to my data?

We will collect the following data in this study: audio recordings, accuracy, and reaction times. We also will have the demographic information provided by Prolific, which cannot be used to identify you.

Research data:

All tasks collect both accuracy and reaction time data.

Personal data:

Your voice will be recorded. You will see a recording icon when your microphone is being recorded.

Other data:

We will receive your Prolific ID, together with the information you provided to Prolific regarding your nationality, sex, native language(s), education level, student status, parental education level, and language-related disorders / literacy difficulties.

All data will be kept for at least 10 years on a secure server inside the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics. Only a select group of employees with specific authorization can access the data. If you decide that you want your data to be destroyed, please let us know as soon as possible, but within 1 month after finishing the study at the latest. Research data (collected during the study) and personal data (for example your name) will be stored separately. Research data can be traced back to a specific person only via a code or participant number. The link between data that can identify you directly and the research data will be saved in a key file. The data will be made anonymous as soon as possible, but at the end of the data collection period at the latest. If anonymizing the data is not possible (for example with video or audio tapes and pictures), we will handle this data in the same way we handle personal data, for which we take extra security measures according to the privacy law. All of the collected data will only be used for scientific purposes. We hope to publish our research data in the next three years. Please note that we cannot destroy research data after the publication of our study.

START THE EXPERIMENT

Download the experimental software here for Windows.

Download the experimental software here for Mac.

Please note that the experiment must be performed on a computer or laptop (not a tablet or phone), with a minimum screen size of 13".

Technical problems?

Your computer might warn you about opening the file, since it is a program not made by a "known developer". However, our Technical Group developed the program and has carefully checked it for security risks. You can feel confident that the download is safe. If you have any questions, you can also contact us (kyla.mcconnell [at] mpi.nl).

You may still see a warning when you try to open the program. On Windows, you might have to click "More Info" on the warning before you can click "Open Anyway".

On Mac, move the downloaded .app file to your Documents. Open the Finder and navigate to Documents. Hold control (Ctrl) and click on the file, opening a dropdown menu. Click open. This opens the file in administrator mode. You should see a popup that allows you to Open the file (or, depending on your operating system, you may have to first click on the ? symbol). Note that once you open the experiment, you'll probably also see a popup about microphone access, which you need to allow.
