Newcomer: Kate Groves
Kate Groves is a Deaf American living in Delft. She has her Master’s degree in Deaf Education (with a specialization in English instruction) from the Rochester Institute of Technology in the USA. She taught English in the USA and Italy for about 10 years before she moved to the Netherlands with her family.
She has also been working on her part-time PhD in Psycholinguistics from the University of Birmingham under Dr. Robin Thompson. Her research focus is on language attitudes in connection to home language environments and academic achievement in D/deaf youth in the US and UK. She expects to enter the writing period of her programme in the spring of 2025.
She joined the Multimodal Language Department as a research assistant to work with Hasan Dikyuva, providing English language support.
She moved to Delft in late 2014, where she co-parent her multilingual daughters, aged 9 and 4, with her ex-husband. She currently works part-time doing external communications for a small marketing firm in Delft.
In her spare time, she writes and publishes stories about her daily experiences. She is also part of an informal network of international “Power Women” that meet regularly to support each other in all aspects of life as we build our homes in the Netherlands.
