The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) for Language Sciences recently announced two prestigious, fully-funded PhD fellowships spanning four years (2025-2029). These fellowships, set to begin in September or October 2025, offer selected candidates a unique opportunity to engage in cutting-edge, interdisciplinary research within the field of multimodal communication.

Interaction between Gestures and Prosody in Information Packaging: The Case of Focus Marking
- This interdisciplinary project, supervised by Prof. Dr. Asli Özyürek, Prof. Dr. Amalia Arvaniti, Dr. Judith Holler, and Dr. Hatice Zora, aimed to explore how gestures and prosody interact in information packaging across languages. A multi-method approach combined corpus analysis and experimental validation in multimodal communication to investigate the roles of gestures and prosody in focus marking.

Multimodal Interaction in Adult Neurogenic Communication Disorders
- Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Aslı Özyürek, Dr. Marina B. Ruiter, and Dr. Sharice Clough, this project focused on understanding multimodal communication in adults with neurogenic communication disorders. The research sought to analyze video interactions to study how gestures, facial expressions, and verbal cues support mutual understanding and communication efficiency in affected populations.
